Alon Y. Avidan, MD, MPH, FAAN, FAASM
Dr. Avidan is Professor of Neurology at UCLA where he serves as Director of the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center and Director of the UCLA Neurology Clinic. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from UCLA and attended Medical School at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences where he also obtained a Master of Public Health. He completed his Neurology Residency at the Georgetown University Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident. After residency, he completed a Fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology and Sleep Disorders at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Before moving to UCLA, Dr. Avidan was at the University of Michigan from 1999-2006, where he was Assistant Professor, Director of the Sleep Disorders Clinic and Chair of Resident Education in the Department of Neurology. In 2008, he has served as Visiting Professor of Neurology Education in the Department of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Avidan was Principal Investigator of a National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute, NIH, Sleep Academic Award. He developed key educational modules for teaching sleep topics which have been adopted by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He has published over 100 chapters, letters to the editor, peer reviewed articles, curated an issue focusing on Sleep Disorders for the AAN publication, Neurology: Clinical Practice (NCP), guest edited three issues of Seminars in Neurology on Sleep, an AAN Continuum issue on sleep and had coauthored four books: "Handbook of Sleep Medicine," "Geriatric Sleep Medicine," "Review of Sleep Medicine" and Atlas of Clinical Sleep Medicine." He has developed expertise in sleep disorders in neurological disease and sleep disorders in the older patient population. His research interests are in the field of geriatrics sleep medicine, insomnia and sleep and fatigue management in residency training. His clinical interests include management of insomnia, sleep disordered breathing, restless legs syndrome, circadian rhythm disorders, and hypersomnia.
Since 2004, he has been awarded "Best Doctor in America Description." In 2013, he received "Super Doctors" distinction, which is given to the top 5% physicians within the respective state or region. He is President Elect of the California Sleep Society. Dr. Avidan is a frequently invited speaker at universities and national and international meetings. He has served on a variety of review boards and committees. He has been featured on a number of television programs including Dateline NBC, National Public Radio, the Washington Post, USA Today and CNN.com and many local and radio programs focusing on sleep disorders.
Dr. Avidan is licensed to practice medicine in California. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Board of Sleep Medicine and a Diplomate in the Specialty of Sleep Medicine by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
